"कसको story मा कसले react गर्यो," र "आफू भन्दा धनी जीवनका photos हेरेर दुःखी हुने." (Checking who reacted to whose story, feeling sad seeing photos of lives richer than your own.)
Does this sound familiar? For many of us in Nepal, social media is a double-edged sword. It keeps us connected to family abroad and friends across the country, but it can also be a major source of social media anxiety, comparison, and stress.
If you find yourself mindlessly scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, or Tiktok for hours, feeling inadequate or anxious afterward, you're not alone. This is a sign that it might be time for a digital detox—not to quit entirely, but to build a healthier relationship with your phone.
This guide offers practical steps for a digital detox that actually works in the context of our Nepali lives.
First, Recognize the Signs: Are You Experiencing Social Media Anxiety?
तपाईं आफैलाई तुलना गर्दै हुनुहुन्छ? (Do you find yourself constantly comparing?) Your life vs. the highlight reels of others' vacations, new cars, or success stories.
FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out): Feeling anxious that you're missing out on an event or conversation if you're not online.
The Validation Loop: Feeling down if a post doesn't get enough likes or comments.
Physical Symptoms: Wrist or neck pain, eye strain, and disrupted sleep patterns from late-night scrolling.
Neglecting Real-Life Duties: Spending more time on phone addiction than with family, on studies, or on household chores.
If you nodded yes to any of these, a digital detox can help you reclaim your time and your peace of mind.
Practical Digital Detox Tips For Better Mental Health
1. Start with a "No-Phone" Morning Ritual
Instead of grabbing your phone the second you wake up, try to win the first hour of your day. Drink your morning chiya without scrolling. Step outside, take a few deep breaths, or simply talk to your family. This small change sets a calm tone for the entire day.
2. Curate Your Feed
Your social media should be a space that lifts you up, not brings you down.
Unfollow or Mute: Unfollow accounts that make you feel insecure, angry, or inadequate. This isn't rude; it's essential for your mental health.
Follow Positivity: Actively follow pages that inspire you—Nepali positivity pages, hobby groups (like gardening or cooking), or educational content.
3. Turn Off Notifications
Every ping is designed to pull you back in. Take back control by turning off non-essential notifications for social media apps. This prevents constant interruptions and allows you to check your phone on your terms, not the app's.
4. Designate a "Phone-Free" Zone
Choose a time or place in your home where phones are not allowed. The best and most culturally relevant example is:
During Meals (खाना खाँदा): Make the dining table a phone-free zone. This encourages real conversation with your family, a core value in Nepali households.
5. Use Tech to Fight Tech
Screen Time Trackers: Both Android and iOS have built-in screen time features. Use them to see exactly how much time you're wasting and set daily limits for yourself.
App Timers: Set a 30-minute daily timer for your most used apps. Once the time is up, the app will lock for the day.
6. Replace the Scroll with a Real Hobby
The best way to break a bad habit is to replace it with a good one. What did you enjoy before the smartphone took over?
Read a book (Nepali or English).
Help with cooking or gardening.
Learn a new skill, like playing a musical instrument.
Simply sit and have a genuine conversation with your parents or grandparents.
7. The Why Check
Before you open an app, ask yourself: "Why am I opening this? What am I looking for?" Often, we open apps out of pure boredom or habit. This simple moment of pause can stop the mindless scroll before it starts.
Remember: It's About Balance, Not Quitting
A digital detox isn't about deleting all your apps and disappearing. It's about creating boundaries so that you use social media as a tool for connection, not a source of anxiety. In a country like Nepal where family and community are so important, protecting your mental peace from the digital world is crucial for your real-world well-being.
Take a small step today. Maybe it’s turning off notifications or enjoying one phone-free meal. Your mind will thank you for it.
